What wonderful byways of history, this enterprise leads one into. George Colt Langley was clearly involved with the British Auxiliary Legion, sent to support the Liberals during Spain’s First Carlist War.

WJK: “General Sir George C. Langley served in the [British] operations on the north coast of Spain [during the First Carlist War].” He was “in command of a detachment of Royal Marines of H.M.S. Castor in 1834 and two following years, and was severely wounded on 9 June 1836, defending the Heights of Passages [what they?] against a very superior force of Carlists. For his conduct on this occasion, he was awarded the First Class of the Order of San Fernando. He served subsequently on the north coast of Spain in 1838 to 1840, and had the same order conferred on him a second time for his general services in Spain.”

On 19 Oct 1847 when Isabella was 23, she married Colonel Arthur Walton ONSLOW, son of Sir Henry ONSLOW Bart. Arthur Walton died on 28 May 1895 in Brighton, Sussex. Occupation: 41st Regiment, Bengal Native Infantry.

WJK: “Colonel Onslow served in the First Afghan War (medal and clasp).” In June 1857, during the Indian Rebellion (Mutiny), the native troops of the 41st Regiment mutinied at Sitapur (Seetapore). Onslow saw further service during the Rebellion and was awarded the Indian Mutiny Medal.

On 3 Mar 1859 when Julia was 29, she married Lt Colonel Edward Congreve Langley DURNFORD. Born on 8 May 1832. Edward Congreve Langley died in 1926; he was 93. Occupation: Royal Marine Artillery.

WJK: During the Crimean War, “Lt Colonel Durnford served with the Royal Marine Battalion at the operations against and surrender of the Forts of Bomarsund [in the Ă…land Islands off the south-west coast of Finland] in August 1854, the latter part of the time doing duty as Assistant Engineer. [He] served with the Baltic Expedition in 1855, and was in command of a mortar in the flotilla during the bombardment of Sveaborg.” He was awarded the Crimea Medal.
